Federal

Federal funding generally makes up 10% or less of “all school  revenues" (Carey 2).

  • Federal funding was simply meant “to supplement, not supplant, state and local resources" (Carey 2).
  • Public schools have historically been funded by a majority of local and state taxes.

State

The funding from state taxes varies between states (Carey 11).

  • State funding accounts for 83.9% of funding in New Mexico.
  • State funding accounts for 38.2% of funding in Nebraska.

Local

Local taxes make up for the rest of the funding not done through the Federal and State governments.

  • Normally the majority of this funding is done through local property taxes.
